Congratulations to all the Travelers’ Choice Food & Wine winners

The TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice family of awards has been expanded to include food and wine destinations.

Earlier this week, 70 gastronomically outstanding destinations across the globe – including New Orleans, Florence, Bangkok, Buenos Aires and Melbourne – were recognized in the inaugural 2011 awards.

The Travelers’ Choice Food and Wine Destinations award winners were determined based on the most highly rated food and wine destinations by travelers in TripAdvisor reviews.

To mark the launch of the new awards, let’s take a look at some of the things reviewers liked the most and what they felt made some wining and dining experiences stand out above the crowd.

“Like a great symphony, it just got better and better with every course with a finale that left the heart feeling well.” – JHHY on the Peller Estates Winery Restaurant, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada

Reviewers seemed to appreciate a cozy, intimate atmosphere. Small restaurants with that neighborhood feel resonated, making travelers believe that they were having an authentic, local experience.

“This is an unbelievably good little restaurant frequented by locals who really know their food and appreciate creative cuisine using local ingredients. “ – Kate1258 on Coquette, New Orleans, United States

“The restaurant is tiny, like a neighborhood hole-in-the-wall, with limited seating so decor is tasteful but nothing fancy.” – Jade_Unearthed on La Table de Tee, Bangkok, Thailand

Tasting menus were popular with reviewers and came up repeatedly as a good way to experience local cuisine at its best.

“We had the 5 course degustation menu with matching wines. No other way to describe except perfect.” – Reshous on Grossi Florentino, Melbourne, Australia

“The chef’s tasting menu is the best way to sample the freshest the season has to offer.” – JHHY on the Peller Estates Winery Restaurant, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Canada

“I love tasting menus, not simply because they eliminate food envy and order pressure, but also because you get to eat everything – and with 8 courses that’s something you’ll be glad of here.”  – LisaGoldapple on Hernan Gipponi, Buenos Aires, Argentina

But what made people keep coming back for more? No surprises there – good food and great service, of course!

“Perfectly cooked fish, so good was that experience that we returned for lunch (and breakfast) and had the best sandwich ever.”  – Enriquegb on Hernan Gipponi, Buenos Aires, Argentina

“…what makes me go back time and time again is the service with a smile” -yueandme on Chokolait Hub, Melbourne, Australia

“Professional staff and a menu to satisfy everyone are only a couple of the things that keep me going back.” – DJBradachNaples_FL on Mr. B’s Bistro, New Orleans, United States
